The lost mansion of Sten Sture the Elder

Räfsnäs kungsgård, in the rural commune of Strängnäs, was once the estate of Sten Sture the Elder, a Medieval figure who lived there in his younger years. Over the centuries, it has belonged to many powerful nobles and royals - from Erik Johansson, Sten Sture’s nephew, and Gustav Vasa, to Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, Clas Tott, and Karl X Gustav. Today, it stands as a former royal estate, having been sold back into private hands in 1996. The large stone house that dominated the hill overlooking a lake eventually fell into disrepair and was replaced by the current main building of wood, built in 1737.
