Mariefred Charterhouse

Mariefred Charterhouse, sometimes referred to as Gripsholm Charterhouse, was a Carthusian monastery established in 1493 by Jakob Ulvsson and Kort Rogge at the behest of Regent Sten Sture the Elder. The monastery served for less than 30 years before the country's religious changes. Some buildings and fragments have survived, while others were dismantled to make way for Gripsholm castle. Today, it is only the church and a few stones that remain of the Carthusian monastery. The grave of Sten Sture lies in the same place as the monastery church.
