The house where Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in the Spanish town of Alcalá de Henares in 1547. The house where he spent his early years no longer exists, but a replica was built in 1956 based on research by historian Luis Astrana Marín. The original house was owned by Cervantes' aunt, Maria, and he lived there until 1551 when he moved to Valladolid. A commemorative plaque was installed before the theater Teatro Salón Cervantes was built on the solar where an earlier tradition alleged that his birthplace stood. The museum houses a permanent exhibition featuring domestic architecture, furniture, and household items from the 16th and 17th centuries. It also offers temporary exhibitions about Cervantes and his works.
