Unearthing History: 15th-century Fortress Unveils Madrid's Ancient Past

Recent archaeological discoveries unearth traces of the Bronze Age within Madrid's 15th-century fortress, inviting exploration of its unique historical chronicles.

Nestled within the Alameda de Osuna district in Barajas, Madrid, Spain, this 15th-century fortress, often referred to as the castle of Barajas or castle of Zapata, stands as one of the few remaining medieval fortifications in the city. It shares this distinction with the castillo de Viñuelas and the remnants of Arab and Christian city walls. Archaeological excavations, initiated in 1996, have exposed historical relics ranging from the Bronze Age to the Roman era. The museum within its walls opened to the public in 2010. The Ayuntamiento de Madrid now oversees its maintenance.
