The statue, honoring Lázaro Cárdenas, stands at 3.5 meters in Parque Norte, Madrid, Spain. Funded by the Ayuntamiento and popular subscription among Spanish Republican exiles in Mexico, the statue's design was awarded to Mexican sculptor Julián Martínez Soto, who was a Spanish exile in Mexico. Initially intended for Plaza del Presidente Cárdenas, the statue was too large for the original intended location. The full-sized statue was displayed at Plaza de Colón until it was moved to Parque Norte. The statue was unveiled on November 16, 1987, five years after Lázaro Cárdenas ended his term as President.
