The secret water channel underfoot

Hidden beneath the walkway you tread lies a tunnel whose secret drip could have saved a city.

The Mori-Torbole Tunnel, hidden underground the walkway connecting Mori and Nago-Torbole, is a remarkable piece of engineering. Constructed in 1959 to combat the regular flooding of Verona, the tunnel stretches for 32,392 feet, connecting the Adige to Lake Garda while maintaining a difference in level of 348 feet between its opening and the lake. Its purpose is vital: it diverts excess water from the Adige into the lake, reducing the flood risk in Verona and its neighborhood from once every seventy years to once every two centuries. To raise Lake Garda by just 0.4 inches, the tunnel needs to redirect approximately 130,000,000 cubic feet of water. Today, this forgotten piece of history lies under the walkway, where tourists promenade unaware of the secret drip beneath their feet.
