Nestled in the picturesque French commune of Hary, in the Aisne department of Hauts-de-France, stands the Église Saint-Corneille-et-Saint-Cyprien d’Hary, a fortified church famed for its historical landmark status. Of particular intrigue is the fact this historical relic has been at the centre of a centuries-old feud between two ambitious counts. This church, built in the 12th century and initially designed as a template for other structures in the Thiérache region, boasts a unique charm that has captivated for centuries.
Its use as a courthouse in the past simply served as a preamble for its more peculiar purpose – a battleground for centuries. Hiding in plain sight, like a hidden treasure, the Church of Two Counts continues to stand the test of time, silently witnessing the power struggle between the contenders. The church's clocher, a square structure far from ordinary, is intended to provide safety for the villagers amidst enemy confrontations. Intriguingly, its cross-shaped design with underdeveloped arms and an eastern choir may seem ordinary, but evidently hides secrets and history.
From the Roman-style south wall held vertical by tiles to the three ogival arches on the north wall, each adorned with a stone key, the charm of this medieval gem can't be overstated. The choir ends in a three-part altar, elevated by six projecting and retreating buttresses. The windows of the transept and nave, rebuilt and modified over the years, bear the traces of time, but five full-circle windows remain, standing steadfast between the arches supporting the choir.
The wainscot of the nave, installed in 1704, bears the signature 'Dobigny 1704' on one of the boards. Despite the official patron saints being Saint Corneille and Saint Cyprien, the church was once home to a statue of the beloved figure, Saint Berthaud, above the chapel's left altar. This peculiar addition serves as a reminder that even sacred places hold the potential to fuel rivalry, and the Saint-Corneille-et-Saint-Cyprien church in Hary is no exception.
As a testament to the hundreds of years of struggle it has witnessed, this church stands as a symbol of history, mystery, and intrigue, captivating those who dare to step inside.
