Port-Cros's Guardian Fort

Fort de l'Éminence is a French military fort located on Port-Cros island (Var). It replaced an older fort built in 1635 under Richelieu's orders to counter a Spanish threat. Construction of the current fort started in the late 18th century and was completed in 1876, with interruptions during 1814. Although allied bombings damaged the fort during the landing of Provence in August 1944, it continues to stand guard. Today, it is managed by the League of Education of the Var and hosts educational trips, leisure centers, and associations. The fort is located at an altitude of 140 meters and is 25 minutes from the village.
