The First Poem

The First Poem

This runestone in the ground floor of the tower contains the poem and the first known stanza in Swedish literature that features a rhyme. The text reads as follows (in modern Swedish): ". and Ingeberg after her husband," followed by the versified conclusion:

He drowned in the sea of Holm.

His knarr sailed in heavy weather,

only three managed to escape."

The verse states that Ingeberg's husband was killed in an accident while traveling on a knarr, a sturdy ship primarily built for trade journeys. While traveling on the sea of Holm, the ship suffered an accident and sank; everyone on board drowned except for the three who managed to escape. The sea of Holm may have been the waters around Bornholm or another stretch of water along the way to Holmgård.
