Deep within the heart of Douala, Cameroon, a wondrous edifice known as the Chamber of Commerce stands tall. Crafted in a time when Douala was under French rule, this enchanting structure was brought to life between the years of 1927 and 1928, being the embodiment of late Art Nouveau enchantment. More than just a magical work of architecture, it serves as a symbol of Douala's historical policy and economic growth, born under French Mandate in 1921.
The purpose of this monument, nestled under the French Mandate, was to serve as an advisory body, employing resources for development and setting market prices for farmers. Under the guidance of the Commissioner of the Republic, fifteen distinguished individuals were carefully selected, destined to serve a two-year term within this chamber of dreams. Intriguingly, two indigenous Doualans were among the chosen, A magical night, forever remembered, was the visit of General Charles de Gaulle in 1940. During this enchanted evening, he addressed the assembly, imploring the inhabitants to join Free France.
