Hidden in the heart of Tripoli, the Red Castle, a beacon known as As-saraya Al-hamra, stands as a testament steeped in history and mystery. This grand fortress' roots go back to the Phoenician times, and further archaeological findings suggest remnants from the Roman era as well. The early days of this Castle remain veiled in shadows. Throughout the pages of time, it has been governed by a tapestry of rulers, from the Vandal Kingdom to the Roman Empire, the Byzantines, the Umayyad Caliphate, the Fatimid Caliphate, the Zirid Emirate, the Crown of Aragon, the Knights Hospitaller, and the Ottoman Empire.
Among the surviving structures, remnants appear to date back to the Aragonese military commanders and the Hospitallers' rule, when it was adorned with a mystical crimson hue. After serving as a royal residence for the Italian governor, this enigma was transformed into a museum, thus becoming the first such establishment in Libya, in the year 1919.
