The dynasty of cabinetmakers that turned a French hotel into a monument

The Hôtel Leglas-Maurice, built in the 19th century (C19), is located at 134 Rue Paul-Bellamy in Nantes, France, in the Hauts-Pavés - Saint-Félix quarter. The building was inscribed as a monument historique in 2015. Historically, the hotel carries the name of the Leglas-Maurice family, a dynasty of cabinetmakers. The business was taken over by François-Pierre Leglas-Maurice in 1848, and the business had stores on Rue de Briord in Nantes and two stores in Paris.

The factory was located on Rue de la Garde-Dieu and Rue Saint-Jean. François Leglas-Maurice was expropriated of his factory and property in 1872. He bought a property of 2 hectares, located north of the city, on Mont-Goguet, at 96 Rue de Rennes. Between 1873 and 1885, he rebuilt the hotel to showcase his industry. The business, represented by the Leglas-Maurice family, gained a reputation beyond the department's boundaries. Unlike other Nantes industries the Leglas-Maurice business disappeared after the second world war.
