The Hanging of Athanase Charette de la Contrie at the Château de la Chabotterie

Athanase Charette de la Contrie, French naval officer and Vendee rebel leader, was executed near the Château de la Chabotterery in March of 1796.

Born in 1763, Athanase Charette de la Contrie hailed from the Breton petty nobility of Couffé, Brittany. With roots tracing back to ancient noble houses, he served in the French Navy during the American Revolutionary War. Later, he became one of the leaders in the War in the Vendee, fighting against the French Revolutionary Army. In March of 1796, he was captured by General Travot close to the Bois de la Chabotterie, not far from the Château de la Chabotterie. He was executed in Nantes that same year. After the dismantling of the 'Grand Army' during the Virée de Galerne in late 1793, Charette and Stofflet kept the rebellion alive by forming near-impregnable fiefdoms, launching constant ambushes from their strongholds.
