The French Phantom of Nantes: Maillé-Brézé - A Silent Glory

Ever curious about the strange fate of the French Navy's T 47-class destroyer, Maillé-Brézé? Let's unravel its hidden tale in Nantes.

Once a formidable vessel of the French Navy, today, Maillé-Brézé takes proud shelter in the city of Nantes.

This T 47-class destroyer was no ordinary ship, boasting a standard displacement of 2,750 long tons (3,800 t) at deep load.

Its power source, two Rateau geared steam turbines, granted it a top speed of 34 knots (63 km/h; 39 mph).

A vessel of fleet anti-aircraft warfare, it was equipped with French-designed Model 1948 127-millimeter (5 inch) guns for dual purposes and 57 mm (2.2 in) AA guns.

On March 2, 1962, Maillé-Brézé joined forces with four other destroyers in the drama at Algiers, providing fresh troops to counter the OAS uprising.

Decommissioned in 1988, it became Nantes' own museum ship.

Today, it stands as a monument historique, listed by the French Ministry of Culture since October 1991.
