The Clock that Tells More than Time

The Clock Tower, a landmark in Brighton, is more than just a timekeeper. Built in 1888 as a commemoration of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, this free-standing clock tower stands at the heart of the city. The Clock Tower is a Classical-style structure with Baroque touches, standing 75 feet (23 meters) tall, with an additional 16 feet (4.9 meters) for the mast for Magnus Volk’s time ball. The four clock faces have a diameter of 5 feet (1.5 meters). The name 'James Willing' is inscribed on the clock faces, as he commissioned the clock tower to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The Clock Tower is one of Brighton's main landmarks.
