The Castle of Velasco, located in the Valle de Mena region of Burgos, Spain, stands as a significant example of medieval military architecture from the late 14th century through the mid-15th century. This hill castle is recognized as the most important fortress in the Mena valley and one of the most remarkable castles in the province of Burgos due to its size, complexity, and state of preservation. Originated as a defensive structure during the late 14th century, it was initially constructed by the Angulo lineage, part of the regional nobility.

The castle served primarily as a watchtower and residential stronghold to protect against external threats, including attacks from rival nobles and remnants of Christian-Muslim border tensions. In 1397, the castle's tower was transferred as part of the dowry from Maria Alonso de Porras to her husband, Diego Sánchez de Velasco, bringing the castle into the possession of the Velasco family, a prominent noble lineage in Castile. Ownership subsequently remained within the Velasco family and allied noble houses of the Burgos area for several centuries, reflecting the estate's role in local feudal networks and inheritance practices among Castilian aristocracy.
