A Torn Twelfth-Century Fortress: Loewenstein, Alsace, France

Welcome to the Château de Lœwenstein, or Lindenschmidt, a medieval relic in Wingen, Bas-Rhin, Alsace. Its history is a peculiar puzzle, one that's not as enigmatic as it initially appears.

This castle, now in ruins, harkens back to the 12th century, but met its demise in 1387. The castle, bisected into two, was constructed for the lords of Fleckenstein. It was slated under the Holy Roman Empire as a fief in 1283. Quite intriguingly, these two halves were under the rule of distinct lords. Since 1898, this historic division gained recognition from the French Ministry of Culture.
