The Barcelona home that opened the door for modernism

Casa Agustí, a red-brick modernista building in the Progrés quarter of Badalona, just outside Barcelona, was built in 1893. It was designed by the renowned architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, marking the start of the modernist movement in the city. Before it became a restaurant in 1936, it served as the residence for Eduard Agustí Saladrigas, an engineer. The house, now a protected building, features a round red brick tower and surrounding gardens, a notable feature in the modernist-style buildings in Badalona.

Casa Agustí is a shining example of the modernist movement that began in Barcelona, paving the way for a style that would dominate the architecture of the city and beyond for the following decades. In 1936, the ground floor of Casa Agustí became a restaurant, and it continues to serve food and refreshments. Unfortunately, notorious is the damage allegedly done to its façade during the extension of the Barcelona Metro network, with Pep Ventura being the nearest existing station.
