Sundsvall's founder: A towering symbol in the city square

Gustav II Adolf's statue adorns the center of Sundsvall's city square, Stora Torget. It was unveiled on August 23, 1911, a gift from Thure Reinhold Thuresson, then director of Sundsvall-Vasa Ångfartygsaktiebolag. The sculpture shows the king, gazing east, with a privilegiebrevet in his left hand. To his right, a coat of arms displays the city's emblem. After exploring the site for the city's relocation, he was granted interim privileges on the 290th anniversary of that event. To this day, he stands as a symbol of Sundsvall's past and an enchantment for its present.
