Movikens Blast Furnace: A Detailed Look at its Location and History

In the 18th century, iron ore was discovered in Bjuråker. Movikens blast furnace was built at the beach by Northern Dellen and was put into operation in 1797. The days of glory were between 1827 and 1856. The furnace was rebuilt in the 1860’s and was replaced by a completely new one in 1903. The operation was shut down in 1937. Today, the blast furnace is restored and provides a good insight into the pig iron production.

Moviken's first blast furnace was built in 1796 to complement the blast furnace in nearby Österbo. Both were connected to Strömbacka mill just north of Moviken, where pig iron was processed into bar iron. The original blast furnace reached its peak production in 1851 and was rebuilt and made more efficient in the 1860s. In 1902-04, a new blast furnace was built, which operated until 1937. It is still standing and is now a listed building.
