Stone circles at Lous Couraus

High above the village of Bilhères, on the plateau du Bénou, 16 circles of stones known as Lous Couraus sit in a prominent and carefully chosen position. Built systematically on mamelons, these 16 stone circles in the commune of Bilhères, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, are a part of the Pyrénées béarnaises. Most groups of cromlechs in the valley of Ossau, which these circles are a part of, have a diameter between 3.5 to 4 meters and 5.5 to 6 meters. Smaller cromlechs, of 2.5 to 3 meters in diameter, and a few larger ones, of 10 to 11 meters, can also be found in the valley of Ossau. The cercle Violaine in the vallon de Soussouéou is an example of these large cromlechs.
