Stone church on an ancient pilgrimage route

Built in the 12th century, Åre Old Church is a rare example of a medieval stone church in the Scandinavian Mountains, located on the Saint Olaf Pilgrim’s Route. Its statue of Saint Olaf, depicting him wearing an unusual hat, in a style suggestive of the Caroleans, remains a mystery.

Åre Old Church, a Romanesque church building situated in Åre, a parish within the Diocese of Härnösand and a locality in Åre Municipality, Jämtland County, Sweden, was built in the 12th century at the Saint Olaf Pilgrim's Route (Swedish: S:t Olofleden), which nowadays goes from Selånger Old Church ruins at Sundsvall over the Scandinavian Mountains to Trondheim, Norway. It is the only stone church in the Scandinavian Mountains from the Middle Ages. The statue of Saint Olaf in the church depicts him wearing an unusual hat, in a style suggestive of the Caroleans.
