Frösötenen, Jämtland’s only runestone and the northernmost raised runestone in Sweden, can be found on a lawn in front of the local county seat. Originally, the stone stood at the tip of a ferry terminal on the sound between the island of Frösön and Östersund. Inscribed on it is the memory of Austmaðr Guðfastr’s Christianization of Jämtland, as recorded by his son, Ásbjörn, Trjónn, and Steinn – the latter meaning ‘stone’. Trjónn is a name exclusive to Jämtland. The runestone dates back to between 1030 and 1050 and was later moved to its current location due to the construction of a new bridge from 1969 to 1971. Austmaðr was a man from Old West Norse-speaking Mainland Scandinavia.
