A modern Swedish church showcasing incredible art and design in Östersund

Stora kyrkan, also known as Östersund’s new church, is a church building located in the Söder district of central Östersund, near Österängsparken. Designed by architect Lars Israel Wahlman, it was consecrated on July 14, 1940, by Bishop Torsten Bohlin. The church's tegel stone structure, supported by a granite base, is a notable example of architecture. Inside, the real wonder lies. Stora kyrkan is a basilica, with a high central nave surrounded by two lower side naves.

At the eastern end, there is a three-sided choir. At the western end, there is a strong church tower with an entrance. The altarpiece at Stora kyrkan is an al fresco mural painting on the choir wall, created between 1939 and 1940 by the professor Hilding Linnqvist. The font at Stora kyrkan was designed by Sune Overud in Odensala. A ray mat, woven in 1936 by women patients at Frösöklinikerna, is hanging on the south wall at Stora kyrkan. A memorial candleholder, capable of carrying 72 candles, was created by Christer Wall at Hults smide in Östersund.

The main organ at Stora kyrkan was built by Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri in Gammelstad in 1995. The choir organ at Stora kyrkan was built by Olof Hammarberg in Göteborg between 1976 and 1977. Stora kyrkan belongs to Östersund’s parish and is part of Härnösands diocese.
