Statue of Steel: Monumento ai Caduti di Porta Romana

In the Porta Romana area of Milan, a monument commemorates the first aerial bombardment on the city, a tragic event symbolized by a Roman soldier and a Lombard militia man.

The Monumento ai Caduti di Porta Romana, inaugurated on 24 June 1923, stands in the Porta Romana district of Milan at the intersection of via Tiraboschi and via Ludovico Muratori. With its three figures, a Roman soldier, a Lombard militia man, and a wounded civilian, the statue depicts historical resistance against invaders, symbolizing the first aerial bombardment on Milan which occurred on 14 February 1916. The victim is a poignant representation of the city’s suffering and endurance during the event. The sculpture was designed by Enrico Saroldi, and the base bears plaques inscribed with the names of those killed during the bombing and the 573 residents of the Porta Romana district who died in the war. This monument serves not only as a physical symbol but also an important reminder of the historical impact of military actions and the resilience of the city and its people.
