Saddell Castle: A 15th-century Scottish fortress steeped in history

With a century-old history, Saddell Castle in Kintyre, Scotland, was once home to the MacDonald family. The current castle, built by David Hamilton, Bishop of Argyll, between 1508 and 1512, was constructed from the stones of the ruined earlier castle. This castle would be the residence of the MacDonald family for centuries to come.

However, it should be noted that Alasdair Mor MacDonald, younger brother of Angus Mor MacDonald, was a Lord of the Isles in the 14th century, not in the 13th century as previously mentioned. The English force led by Thomas Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Sussex, invaded and captured the castle in 1558, not in the earlier 14th century. The castle would later change hands and fall into disrepair when Saddell House was built in 1774. The Landmark Trust bought and restored the castle, and now it is rented out as a self-catering property.

Clan Donald members continue to make annual pilgrimages, keeping alive a connection with the history of the castle.
