Runestone U391

Runestone U391

The stone stands on a glacial erratic in a garden by Prästgatan and is difficult to see (please do not enter the property).

“Frisernas gillebröder … these (runes) after Albod, Slode's companion. May the holy Christ help his spirit. Torbjörn carved them.”

During the Viking Age and early Middle Ages, Frisian and Saxon merchants joined together in trading guilds for the risky ventures that trade in Scandinavia must have been. Frisernas gille was originally founded by Frisians who settled in the city to more easily manage their trade contacts. Soon, Norse people were also admitted into these guilds. Members were committed to helping one another in various difficulties. The name Slode is quite common in runic inscriptions. It is originally a nickname meaning 'reckless, careless'. Albod is a Frisian name. By Mariakyrkan stands a rune stone, U 379, which the brothers of Frisernas gille erected over another guild member.
