The Solitary Scaffold of Grajera: Spain's Curious, Sphere-Capped Pillory

So, what on earth transpired in that remote Spanish village, Grajera, to push its locals up that quaint set of steps, and why was this particular scaffold built just for one?

Perched prettily atop a couple of steps, the Pillory of Grajera, found nestled in good old Segovia, Spain (Castilla y León), is a rather peculiar relic. Its role was to humiliate those who chose to act unfairly, and its creation is as mysterious as its purpose. Constructed some time in the 14th or 15th century, it features a vertical column topped by a scaffold concluding in a sphere. The oddity behind this design leaves one questioning, as does the crime warranting this unique form of retribution.
