The Celestial Carcassonne: A Closer Look at the Peyrepertuse Castle

Perched at an altitude of 800 meters on a limestone ridge, the Peyrepertuse Castle is an iconic medieval fortress located in the Aude department, in the Occitanie region. Often referred to as 'Celestial Carcassonne' due to its imposing size and strategic position, the first records of the castle date back to 806 when it belonged to the Count of Besalú. Over the centuries, it had various rulers, including Narbonne and Barcelona, but it's unclear if the castle was under their control at the same time.

During the Albigensian Crusade, Guillaume de Peyrepertuse, the then lord, was excommunicated in 1224 for his support of the Cathars. After his submission in 1240, the castle became a French royal possession. Today, access to Peyrepertuse Castle is via a path offering panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and the village of Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse. Despite its ruined state, many structures such as the ramparts and the fortified chapel are still well preserved, offering visitors an immersive journey into the medieval history of Languedoc.
