Christeen: America's Oldest Oyster Sloop - A Grim Tale

Meet Christeen, the US's oldest oyster sloop, a vessel that's survived 16 hurricanes, dodged multiple nor'easters, and switched roles from cargo carrier to pleasure yacht, then museum ship. Her dark history unfolds here.

Born in 1883 in Glenwood Landing, New York, as a gift to Captain Smith's 13-year-old wife, Christeen has weathered 16 major hurricanes and countless nor'easters. She was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1992, but her past wasn't all rosy. She once transported cargo between Long Island and New London. From 1958 to 1976, she served as a pleasure yacht. In 1989, she danced with death in New London, Connecticut. Rescued by the Tradewinds Education Network in Connecticut, Christeen was donated to Friends in 1991. By 1999, she was restored at Jakobson Shipyard. Now, she's a working museum ship at the WaterFront Center in Oyster Bay, offering educational tours and charters.
