Hidden beneath the towering limestone cliffs of Capo Caccia lies one of Italy's most spectacular sea caves. While many visitors arrive by boat, the more memorable approach is along the Escala del Cabirol, the "Goat's Staircase" - 654 steps carved directly into the cliff face, descending dramatically towards the sea.
The effort is richly rewarded. Inside Neptune's Grotto, immense chambers reveal forests of stalactites and stalagmites, mirror-like saltwater lakes and monumental rock formations sculpted over millions of years. One of the highlights is Lake Lamarmora, one of the largest underground saltwater lakes in Europe, whose still surface reflects the cave's intricate mineral formations.
Discovered by local fishermen in the eighteenth century, the cave has since become one of Sardinia's most celebrated natural attractions. Yet entering its cool, cathedral-like chambers still evokes the same sense of wonder experienced by its earliest visitors.
