Abenamiento Monument to Cayetano del Toro: From Plaza de Mina to Faculty of

The Monument to Cayetano del Toro, a tribute to a Spanish ophthalmologist, now stands at the Faculty of Medicine in Cádiz, SPIain. Its original location was Plaza de Mina, but it was moved to Plaza de Méndez Núñez after the project's initial patron, Patrocinio de Biedma, passed away in 1927. The academy of Cadiz continued the fundraising efforts for the monument's construction.

In 1928, Mayor Ramón de Carranza took up the project, aiming to secure the cooperation of Primo de Rivera, the president of Spain, for the project.

A grand event, called a 'Velada teatral', was held at the Gran Teatro Falla in 1928 to collect funds for the monument. The inauguration ceremony took place on October 28, 1929, in the presence of Primo de Rivera and other dignitaries.

The Monument now depicts Cayetano del Toro sitting on a promontory with steps, accompanied by a child. A mother offers a laurel crown to Cayetano del Toro at the foot of the monument. The base of the monument bears an inscription 'AL EMINENTE DOCTOR CAYETANO DEL TORO SU CIUDAD NATAL, 1842'.

The left side of the monument has an inscription 'AUTHOR OF NUMEROSAS OBRAS CIENTIFICAS DIO GRAN IMPULSO A LA OFTALMOLOGIA'. The right side of the monument bears the inscription 'SIENDO PRESIDENTE DE LA DIPUTACION PROVINCIAL Y ALCALDE DE CADIZ HIZO GRANES REFORMAS DANDO UN GRAN EJEMPLO DE ALTRUISMO Y AMOR A LA CIUDAD'.

A bas-relief on the back of the base depicts Cayetano del Toro inclining over a body, presumably his mother, as a symbol of gratitude.

Every January 2nd, an offering of flowers is made to the monument in honor of Cayetano del Toro's death.
