José Celestino Mutis: The Marble Bust Honoring a Scientist

José Celestino Mutis y Bosio, born on Spanish soil in Cádiz, left a lasting impact on the field of Botany. His exceptional work earned him a global reputation. In 1932, to honor the second century of his birth, Cádiz built a monument to celebrate the life and work of its native scientist. The monument was placed in a parterre of the Paseo de las Palmeras del Parque Genovés. This monument, standing tall since 1932, is a pedestal featuring a marble bust crafted by Gaditano artist José Gargallo. The monument’s unveiling took place on the 6th of April, 1932, with the honor bestowed upon the Colombian Consul by the Alcalde of Cádiz.
