Perched on a hill 3 km east of the city center of Burgos lies the remarkable Miraflores Charterhouse, a symbol of Spain's history, faith, and architectural marvel. This charterhouse, a creation of the Order of the Carthusians, was donated by King John II of Castile in 1442. The current building, crafted in 1454, stands under the patronage of Saint Mary of the Annunciation. Its construction was entrusted to Juan de Colonia, with Simon de Colonia completing the work in 1484, under the behest of Queen Isabella I of Castile.
The church, adorned with an Isabelline style western facade, is decorated with the coats-of-arms of its founders. The monastery, a late Gothic jewel, houses the impressive buried remains of Isabella I of Castile and John II of Castile, her father. Today, it offers a captivating blend of history, architecture, and tranquility, just a short footpath away from the city center.
