Segovia's Contested Bullring: Six Centuries of Bullfights and a Mystical Maze

The bullring of Segovia, a monumental edifice of the city, began as a temporary solution to the problem of festivals outgrowing the main square in 1803. The first bullfight was held in 1803 before the bullring was completed, contested origins notwithstanding. The bullring was inaugurated in 1805, but the exact date remains disputed. Despite attempts to renovate by Miguel Arévalo in 1856, Joaquín Odriozola at the end of the 19th century, and Francisco Javier Cabello Dodero in 1916, the bullring remains a labyrinthine structure to this day.
