In Stieg Trenter's 1949 crime novel, Eld, the beautiful Mariedal at Karlberg Canal is set ablaze. Here, photographer Harry Friberg encounters a dying general consul.
"The Carlberg Lake shimmered gently enamel-white, traffic had not yet started and on the other side of the water Karlberg Castle stood out without visible military presence. The sunbends had not waned at Länkarna Hornsberg and around the colonist cottages ripened plums, pears, apples, blackberries and roses and potatoes. The author's house beside Ekelund's Bridge slept with red timber posts. As if everything was enough. As if the world itself did not require any writers to write it down."
