Halesowen Abbey: Discovering the historical community beneath the ruins

The ruins of Halesowen Abbey reveal a complex history. Founded by Peter des Roches in 1214, it acquired two daughter abbeys and a dependent priory. However, manorial court records suggest a discontented community, with acts of resistance reported. Peter des Roches also founded Titchfield Abbey in Hampshire and Talley Abbey in Wales. Titchfield Abbey, like Halesowen, was dedicated to St. John the Baptist, but Talley Abbey was transferred to Halesowen due to its distance from Amiens' St. John the Baptist's Abbey. The abbey's canons followed the Rule of St. Augustine, yet the late 15th century revealed widespread sexual exploitation of local women during the order’s visitor.
