Sharing Graves: Swedish and Russian Soldiers of the Finnish War of 1808 in Kalix

Ryssgraven, established in 1883, marks the resting place of Swedish and Russian soldiers who perished during the Finnish War of 1808. The war ended with Finland separating from Sweden and becoming part of the Russian Empire. A stone at the site reads, 'Here, enemies and friends from the Finnish War of 1808 share the same bed. 1883 erected.'

In 2009, two centuries since Finland's separation from Sweden, a government project named 'Year of the Mark 1809' was initiated. A Russian, Finnish, and Swedish delegation visited Ryssgraven in Kalix, where they laid a wreath.

Additionally, in 2009, a memorial stone was also unveiled in Månsbyn outside Kalix, commemorating the signing of the peace treaty between Russia and Sweden in 1809.
