Thomas Friant: Apparition of Grand Haven, MI

When the ghostly specter of Thomas Friant, Grand Haven's lost ferry, rises up from Lake Superior's icy grip, it's a grim reminder for the other wooden vessels roaming there. Rest in peace with her. kind of.

Born in 1884 in Grand Haven, Michigan, the Thomas Friant wasn't your average boat. Owned by Reuben and Ralph Vanderhoef, she ferried passengers on the Grand River until her icy plunge beneath Lake Superior. A watery tomb filled with mysteries now, it's her final resting place. Five different owners tried to claim her, but Norwegian captain Einer Miller couldn't escape the same fate as the others - the ice claimed him, too. A hefty 81.42 gross register tons and 46.20 net register tons meant she wasn't a boat to underestimate. Yet, she's more like the spectral sibling of those wooden Lake Superior boats, a haunting specter lurking in the depths, never to be forgotten.
