Washburn's Whiz-Bang Wonder of the West

Step inside this grand ol' courthouse, and you might catch a phantom dial tone echoing, reminding us of the good ol' days when legal eagles squawked on the phone. A sight to behold, this timeless testament to outdated tech!

Nestled in the heart of Washburn, Wisconsin, you'll find the Bayfield County Courthouse – a Neoclassical stunner that's been standing tall since 1896. Designed by the renowned Off & Joralemann, with a little help from John Halioram, this pad cost a tidy sum of $31,737. It sports classic quoins at the corners, a dome-capped cupola, and a portico outfitted with Corinthian columns. But what makes it distinctive? Its hi-tech phone system! Each office was connected, giving these 19th-century lawyers a secret weapon in the court game, considered 'one of the snazziest features' of the brand new building. Peering in on a slice of Washburn's tech-savvy history, the courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 17, 1975.
