Chicago's Titanic on the Great Lakes: Ottawa

In May 1881, a monster tug named Boscobel, renamed Ottawa, dawned on Chicago, Illinois. This lumbering leviathan was the city's largest until 1909. Yet, in 1909, a sinister inferno sank Ottawa to the abyss of Lake Superior.

This hulking vessel, rechristened Ottawa, loomed over Chicago in May 1881. On the Illinois shore, it dwarfed all other tugboats. For years, it reigned as Chicago's largest until 1909. Sailing the Great Lakes as the most formidable salvage vessel, Ottawa was triumphant. But on November 13, 1909, it was ordered to Outer Island to save a foundering steamboat. By November 29, 1909, it had succeeded. But the jubilation lasted less than 30 minutes. Suddenly, an enigmatic blaze engulfed Ottawa, sinking it into Lake Superior's cold embrace. The crew escaped, leaving the mystery of the inferno unsolved. In 1992, Ottawa's wreckage was enshrined in the National Register of Historic Places.
