Eysses, located 1.5 km from Villeneuve-sur-Lot center, offers a fascinating peek into the remnants of a Roman civilization that dates back to the 2nd century BC. This archaeological site, once known as Excisum during Gallo-Roman times, occupies a 50-hectare area and was strategically located at the crossroads of two Roman roads, connecting cities like Aginnum (Agen) and Vesunna (Périgueux) in the north-south direction, and Divona (Cahors) and Burdigala (Bordeaux) in the east-west direction. The name of the city appears on the Table of Peutinger and the Itinerary of Antonin. Today, a circular tower visible in elevation remains as a testament to this ancient civilization.
