The Dunkerque Gate, located on Avenue Léon Jouhaux near Deûle, was first constructed in 1672 as part of the new Vauban fortified enclosure south of the Esplanade. It was rebuilt in the late 1860s when the enclosure was expanded following the annexation of Wazemmes, Moulins, Esquermes, and Fives in 1858. Initially, it was formed of two corps de garde and five transverse pillars, but only two corps de garde and two pillars remain today. After the dismantling of the ramparts in the 1920s, the site housed a paving store before becoming the municipal sports service.
