Defending the port of Palma: A 14th-century mystery

Torre de Paraires, a 14th-century tower defending Portopí port in Palma, might date back to the Roman era, according to some. Torre de Paraires and Torre de Portopí were the primary defenses of the Port of Palma, with Torre de Senyals closing the port with a chain. However, the Tower was designed to pair with the Torre de Senyals. Gunpowder weapons, such as bombards and crossbows, were documented in the 15th century. The tower was later used as a lazaret, known as Torre de Paraires due to its role in controlling epidemics.

It maintained this role until the 17th century. Despite losing importance, a battery of artillery was installed at its foot in the early 18th century. The tower was auctioned in 1875 but was declared a monument historicoartístic the following year, then restored in 1965. Today, the tower stands as a testament to the history of Palma, a quadrangular structure built with marsh materials.
