The Palma Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the Balearic Islands and the second largest in Spain in terms of its rose window. It was built on the site of an Almohad mosque just after the recapture of Palma de Mallorca in 1229 by King James I. The cathedral took over four centuries to complete. It is the seat of the Diocese of Mallorca and a popular tourist attraction in Palma today. The rose window, a central feature of the cathedral's west façade, measures nearly 14 meters in diameter, making it the second largest extant Gothic rose window in the world after the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. The site of Madina Mayurqa's largest mosque was consecrated by Bishop Pere de Morella in 1230. The earliest still-extant part of the cathedral, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, was completed in 1327.
