A Rare Greek-Cross Chapel in Avignon's Hidden Closter

The Hôtel Cloitre Saint Louis Avignon, located at Rue du Portail Boquier 20, was built at the end of the 16th century as a monastery for the Jesuit novices. However, it wasn't the religious training that drew people to the novitiate, but rather the unique and rare plan of the chapel, inherited from the Renaissance. The chapel, designed by Brother Jesuit Étienne Martellange, breaks with normality, as the openings are not arranged according to the axes but grouped in pairs on the diagonals, a characteristic unique to Martellange.
