Valenciennes' Fortified Whimsy: Art Meets History in the 19th Century

At the tail-end of the 19th Century, Valenciennes' history found itself entangled with art in a unique, enigmatic dance. The town's fortifications, on the verge of extinction, sparked intrigue among local artists.

This fascinating fusion was rekindled by the town's own history, flavored by the zeitgeist of the era, and shadowed by the impending demise of the fortifications. Among the artists captivated, Édouard Mariage, Creator of a comprehensive book on the subject, joined forces with Constant Moyaux and François Schommer to create illustrated masterpieces. Jules Delsart, a member of the Sedentary Artillery of Valenciennes, chipped in with evocative photographs, adding a layer of mystery to the book. This Artillery, responsible for Valenciennes' defense since the end of the 14th century, played a significant role in this tale weaved and woven, piece by piece.
