Château de Canon: thirteen walled gardens blooming in Normandy

The Château de Canon, a 18th-century castle in the Calvados departement, Normandy, France, was a hideaway for nobles and kings. The castle's grandeur and history are outshined by the stunning gardens surrounding it. Classified as Jardin remarquable, or Remarkable Garden, these gardens, known as Chartreuses, are the pride of the Château de Canon. The castle's walls hold centuries of secrets and stories. However, the Chartreuses, the thirteen walled gardens tucked into the palace's grounds, draw the attention of visitors today.

Meticulously restored over the years, these gardens have been honored with awards, including the first prize for preservation presented by the association Vieilles maisons françaises in 1985, and the first prize from the fondation des parcs et jardins de France in 1987. They have also received aid from the foundation of parks and gardens of France after the Lothar storm in 1999, and were named as one of the top gardens in France by the Art du Jardin company in 2000.

Visitors can browse the gardens during the annual event at the castle, Rendez-vous dans les Jardins, where they can meet the gardener, buy flowers, and take guided tours of the gardens, castle, and historic village hall.
