Lordship of Tamarit: A Medieval Fortress on the Spanish Coast

Perched high on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Coast near Tarragona, Spain lies the Tamarit castle. In October 1049, the castle was acquired by Bernat Sendred de Gurb, who eventually sold it to Ramon Berenguer I, Count of Barcelona in the same year. The Claramunt family later took control of the castle, its dominion extending beyond the castle walls to a fortified medieval village that relied on sturdy walling, particularly on the western side. The castle is home to four gates, two of which remain, and its lofty battlements offer a glimpse into the ancient sea trade of Tarragona, a key coastal hub during the Middle Ages. The castle stands as a testament to Catalonia’s medieval fortifications and religious architecture, blending Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles.
