Aberlleiniog Castle: Medieval Battlefield on a Hill

Aberlleiniog Castle, also known as 'Castle of the Mouth of the Lleiniog', is a motte and bailey fortress strategically located near the Menai Strait opposite the Norman castle at Abergwyngregyn.Built between approximately 1080 and 1099, the castle is thought to have been erected by Hugh d’Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester, during the conquest of Gwynedd in 1088. Situated on a steep hill, it served as a crucial vantage point for the Normans in their military operations.

The castle has witnessed numerous battles. In 1094, Gruffudd ap Cynan launched a siege on his return from Ireland and was successful, claiming the castle for the Welsh. It is unclear whether they held the castle after the 13th century, when Edward I arrived.

A stone structure was built on the site before the mid-17th century, but the exact timeline of the replacement of the original timber structure is unknown. The site was destroyed by Thomas Cheadle in the 17th century, and it is uncertain if he held the title of constable of Beaumaris. The site was restored for public viewing from 2008.

The keep had broad ramparts fronted by a narrow wall rising to a parapet; each corner contained a round tower, the remnants of which can still be seen.
